Frequently Asked Questions

ASK DR GEORGE

Will a hearing aid restore my hearing to normal?

While hearing aids cannot fully restore normal hearing, they can help immensely. About 9 out of 10 hearing aid users report an improved quality of life.

Is a hearing test painful?

No, a hearing test is unobtrusive and painless. It is however an important health procedure because like all health issues it is important to detect any loss of hearing as soon as possible as this can help minimize further hearing loss and other issues later on.

Are you qualified to conduct a hearing evaluation?

This is an important concern for customers. It is true that in Cyprus there are currently no regulations, as is the case with other Health Professionals. However at DR GEORGE HEARING CENTERS we comply with the latest EHIMA (European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association) guidelines representing 90% of hearing aids manufactured in Europe. In Cyprus anyone can sell hearing aids; DR GEORGE believes that this practice does not benefit people with hearing loss. DR GEORGE is committed to following the very best clinical and commercial practice. We are working with Government and regulatory bodies to introduce regulation of the Hearing Aid Industry in Cyprus. Meantime you can be assured that DR GEORGE HEARING CENTERS comply with best practice on behalf of our customers. Dr George Panayiotou was professionally qualified in the USA where FDA Regulations require only licensed practioners to dispense hearing aids. He is a professionally qualified Clinical Audiologist and is personally responsible for ensuring that best practice is implemented for the benefit of our customers.

It is important that customers understand the different roles that Doctors and Audiologists play in hearing loss treatments:

  1. Medical Doctors are rigorously trained to identify and treat medical conditions involving the ear. If an ear problem requires medication or surgery a Doctor is the appropriate professional to help you.

  2. Clinical Audiologists are also trained to identify ear problems. They have advanced degrees from academic institutions and are experts in the non-medical management of hearing loss. This typically involves the selection, programming, and fitting of hearing aids.

How does a hearing aid work?

The microphone in the device picks up the sound in the environment and changes it to electrical energy that goes to a set of amplifiers and other modifying and adjusting circuits. The modified electrical signal is then sent to a miniature speaker (called a receiver) and delivered to the ear. The newest devices are smart enough to amplify certain sounds or frequencies that are tailored to an individual's hearing loss. DR GEORGE ensures that the most appropriate hearing device is recommended to individual customers based on what is best for them.

What is a cochlear implant and how do I know if I need one?

If your hearing loss is very severe and of a certain type, your Doctor may suggest that you talk to an Otolaryngologist about a cochlear implant. An Otolaryngologist is a surgeon who specializes in Ear, Nose, and Throat diseases (ENT).

A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that the surgeon places under the skin and behind the ear. The device picks up sounds, changes them to electrical signals, and sends them past the non-working part of the inner ear and on to the brain.

Do I need two hearing aids?

DR GEORGE HEARING CENTERS can help determine this for you. For most people with hearing loss, binaural amplification (two aids) offers substantial improvement, in both quiet and noisy environments, along with a better sense of direction or localization as to the sound source. However, every case is different and we will always offer you the most appropriate solution.

What is the "best" hearing aid on the market?

The simplest answer to this question is - the one that fits, feels, and works best for you.

There are a number of factors which you and DR GEORGE will discuss that will help determine the exact model and programming that will work best for you. In the end you’ll have a hearing instrument that has been created just for you to address your specific needs. Some of the factors determining which hearing aid is right for you include: your type of hearing loss, your lifestyle, comfort level, and price.

My friend didn’t have a positive experience with hearing aids. Will the same happen to me?

It is possible that your friend’s hearing aids were not fitted properly or they were poorly advised. When searching for the right hearing aid, it is important to begin by locating a professionally certified, caring and competent Audiologist. Dr George Panayiotou is a Clinical Audiologist with years of experience in hearing aid technology. How can I look after my hearing aid?

Proper maintenance and care will extend the life of your hearing aid:

  • Keep hearing aids away from heat and moisture.

  • Clean hearing aids as instructed. Earwax and ear drainage can damage a hearing aid.

  • Avoid using hairspray or other hair care products while wearing hearing aids.

  • Turn off hearing aids when they are not in use.

  • Replace dead batteries immediately.

  • Keep replacement batteries and small aids away from children and pets.

When you buy a hearing device from DR GEORGE, it comes with full instructions on how to maintain and get the best use from your investment.

How much do hearing aids cost?

The cost of hearing aids varies depending on the type of hearing aid, the number of special features and the professional services provided. As a result, the range of prices varies. However, be assured that DR GEORGE will only provide you with a hearing device that suits both your needs and your pocket. We have no interest in selling you a device that is too expensive, or does more than you need for your level of hearing improvement.
